My home dir is seen by non-admin user

Post by pcdoctor »

I have created two accounts on Linux Mint 5 KDE. I login as the non-admin user, go to the home folder, click the up arrow key using konqueror and I'm able to see my home directory. I assume this isn't normal. Ok. I modified the permissions for both accounts. I wish this was implemented by default.

and I'm able to see my home directory
You should be :)
But the default setting for Ubuntu which we inherit is for all to be able to see others home, but not write to it
I don't like this setting but some don't care about it

Thx for responding. I guess it could be worse by giving all users write access.

Sorry - I see that I did not mention that you can change the permissions of your home folder so others can't see it - or rather they'll see the folders but not their content if I remember correctly
Can be done in the GUI as you (no sudo)

Yes, I modified the permissions right after I found out that the other user could see my home dir. I guess I was thinking what if this was a shared pc in a corporate environment. How do the IT people handle this? I use this pc at home but I was just wondering about the business users.

Yes...
I have read somewhere that it is a "design decision" by Ubuntu - can't give you a link but it's out there :)

You know, I can't believe that I took Linux Mint for granted initially and just thought it was just Ubuntu with a bunch of pretty wallpapers. I'd been having problems with firefox on Kubuntu and decided to install Mint. Firefox on Kubuntu kept doing a hard freeze on my computer. For someone unknown reason, it would attempt to start and then freeze or crash. I made sure I had a backup of my docs and decided to install LM KDE.
Here are some differences that I see between Kubuntu and LM KDE

1. No dolphin "unable to save bookmarks" error with LM KDE
2. When doing a cut and paste with Kubuntu the file that I cut always stayed there, I would have to manually delete it.
3. Plus, I don't have to manually install mp3, flash, quicktime, dvd, etc.
4. LM KDE is also much prettier.

Husse,
Is there anyway to make a donation without using Paypal?
I'm in the U.S.
Thx.

No there is not - this is also to keep both donor and Mint safe as well as a question of costs
I think I read that Paypal has simplified the process
