Do you get sound from the USB speakers when/if you reconnect?
If so I think you can just mute the built in speakers as the USB speakers certainly have a volume control of their own

I have to think about this - it's somewhat similar to the problem I have with a USB headset

VLC Player and Flash Player still uses the local laptop speakers. Any idea why?
Not set to use the Creative?

For flash i actually don't know but VLC should have an option to choose sound device in preferences
I may be wrong as I don't have VLC installed in this version of Mint (I have varying between 3 and 10 installed
)
