I don't know the answer to your question but if you want my advice use Manual partitioning anyway (unless you have a completely blank disk). It is the only way to be absolutely sure of what is happening - just based on my experiences and natural caution I guess, but I have read quite a lot of posts saying 'help, I have just erased this or that partition because I let the partitioner choose how to do it'.
This is not a criticism of Mint either it applies to all distros.
