Nvidia 8200M driver

Postby jlb0057 on Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:23 am

I have an Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card and ran into some trouble with Compiz. I changed Visual Effects to "None" and now cannot change back to any other setting, including "Normal." I found this thread:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=21472&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=nvidia+177+driver+nvidia+8200m

The OP on that thread seems to have his problem solved, but I am not sure of the exact steps to take to get the newest Nvidia 180 driver. I currently have the nvidia-glx-177 driver. I just want to make sure I get the steps right, because I just installed yesterday and really do not want to mess up my installation if at all avoidable.

Could someone please help me through the steps to change my nvidia driver?

I apologize for not being clear in my previous post. I believe the referenced topic has the information I need, but I am not clear as to the exact steps and sequence of steps to take. I am concerned about breaking Gnome in the process of updating the driver.

My first instinct would be to remove the nvidia-glx-177 driver in Synaptic and then install nvidia-glx-180, but I see references to Envy and xorg.conf and other configuration/setup tools with which I am unfamiliar.

I have written a tut on how to set the resolution, and how to install the drivers, How to get Nvidia Cards Reolution set. That will explain how to install the drivers manually. The newest drivers are 182.xx, I believe, so make sure to get the newest drivers.

Thanks very much. That is exactly what I have been trying to find.

One question: Must I uninstall the current driver before installing the new driver via Envy? If so, how is the current driver uninstalled?

Thanks again!
