Error before my login

Postby mlov713 on Mon Mar 09, 2009 3:30 pm

I've just got Linux in my laptop, I'm totally new at this,and recently there is a message that appears before my login and it asks me to connect with a "Host", I've tried to put in my user name and password, then it indicates me an error, that my session lasted less than 10 seconds, it gives me the errors details and it advises me to enter in Failsafe to correct the problem. This is what the error say's:

/etc/gdm/Xsession:Beginning Session Setup...
Setting IM throug im-switch for locales=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinput.d/default.

How can I correct this error?

I somewhat recall that I had that kind of error message once, a long while ago. Would you please post your session log (/etc/gdm/Xsession)?

I am not sure I can help you, but the log file would possibly give us more clue. But if you no longer see that message every time you log in, there is nothing else we should/could do.

This is what that file contains:

Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh
#
# This is SORT OF LIKE an X session, but not quite.  You get a command as the
# first argument (it could be multiple words, so run it with "eval").  As a
# special case, the command can be:
#  failsafe - Run an xterm only
#  default - Run the appropriate Xclients startup (see the code below)
#  custom - Run ~/.xsession and if that's not available run 'default'
#
# (Note that other arguments could also follow, but only the command one is
# right now relevant and supported)
#
# The output is ALREADY redirected to .xsession-errors in GDM.  This way
# .xsession-errors actually gets more output such as if the PreSession script
# is failing.  This also prevents DoS attacks if some app in the users session
# can be prodded to dump lots of stuff on the stdout/stderr.  We wish to be
# robust don't we?  In case you wish to use an existing script for other DM's,
# you can just not redirect when GDMSESSION is set.  GDMSESSION will always
# be set from gdm.
#
# Also note that this is not run as a login shell, this is just executed.
#

I cannot spot any misconfiguration in the script. Can you post here the complete X session error log?

The file is called .xsession-errors and is located in your home directory. Also, just in case I will need it, post here the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Re: Error before my login

Postby garda on Tue Mar 10, 2009 1:42 am

ssh: Could not resolve hostname : Name or service not known

Are we talking about a local or remote login?

If it is a local login, check whether your computer name has been correctly specified in /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. These are what my hostname and hosts files looked like after a fresh install:

- /etc/hostname
desk1

- /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 desk1

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

It is a local login

/etc/hostname says my computer name correctly

in /etc/hosts there all exactly as you put them with the difference of my computer name instead of "desk1"
