A few questions for my Dell Inspiron 9300 Notebook

Postby CharlesMcCarthy on Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:03 pm

Linux Mint has incredible potential and as it stands right now is the best OS I have ever used. That said I have run into a few problems that make my daily experience less than it could be. I run a Dell Inspiron 9300 Notebook. Below you will find my lspci info along with my questions/problems:

csm@BigBox ~ $ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03)

00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02)
03:01.0 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev b3)
03:01.1 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C552 IEEE 1394 Controller (rev 08)
03:01.2 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 17)
03:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)

When using my Fn+Brightness keys the keyboard becomes unresponsive to anything other than Fn Keys. If I alt+ctrl+F1 and then F7 I can get my keyboard working again.

My screen refresh rate for my laptop is locked at 60 which I don't know if that is a problem but whenever I play videos with any media player especially in full screen the flicker of the screen makes the video almost unwatchable.

My sound on my laptop has 5 speakers and the volume control only works for 2 of them. In order to adjust my volume I have to adjust PCM and Master - Is it possible to link them both together and is it possible to then set the volume keys to adjust the sound for both linked?

Is there anything that will work to convert avi's for my IPOD? I have tried a few solutions to no avail.

Can I somehow setup my windows key to bring up the MintMenu?

Thanks in advance,
Charles McCarthy

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This is slightly older hardware than I have a solution in stock for
For the sound - try every setting possible
Double click on the volume applet next to the clock
There are options in "Preferences" and the scroll down menu that you can try
60 Hz is the default for most LCD monitors (sometimes 75 Hz)
Have you installed the ATI proprietary video drivers?
If not - got to Hardware Drivers and enable the driver - it will then be downloaded and installed
I think your Radeon is not too old for this

Husse-
Thank you for your reply. I have the ATI drivers 8.543-Oubuntu4.1 installed and all my special effects in Compiz are working great. Video still plays with chop. I have tried VLC, Mplayer and others as well. When I output to my LCD TV it plays fine.

From the same computer and Mint?
If so there is a problem with the monitor in some way - strange
