I have had some experience with Ubuntu, have successfully installed and used 8.1---how ever I do like the ease of use of "mint" a little better: however I've run into a couple of problems......1 OS won't seem to recognize the scanner on Epson 1000ics all in one printer
2 "startup manager" installs but won't come up to make adjustments to boot menu.
I built this computer with Biostar MOBO
Intel Pentium D cpu 3.2 ghz duel core
via chipset P4m900
also install Nvidia non free drivers
Can you guys offer any help?

Let me take the easy one: startup manager
Right click on the Menu button > Select Edit Menu > Administration > Startup-Manager > Properties
replace su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/startupmanager
with gksu /usr/sbin/startupmanager
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.
