wifi chipset is reported as: AR242x

Follow that link. It'll walk you through what you need to do. The Atheros chipset wifi cards are definately problematic. Don't blame Mint, blame Atheros. And blame Toshiba for using Atheros hardware. And then, if you're feeling particularly remorseful and flagellent, blame yourself for buying hardware that has poor manufacturer support for GNU/linux. But mostly just blame Atheros and praise the madwifi people for having a solution.

Not linux voodoo, but firmware voodoo. There is a fwcutter that should disable this switch, but it sounds like you have it working.
