Can't mount USB HDD and USB DVDRW

Postby mobify on Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:34 am

Hi there, I am running Mint 6 with updates installed. For a whole week now I can't figure out why my laptop can't mount the external HDD and the external DVDRW, in fact any devices connected to the USB ports doesn't seem to work. I have tested the devices on other computer with Windows OS and they work fine, also the weirdest thing is that yesterday after I changed the audio settings from skype & alsamixer, they mount properly and I was even able to burn a DVD using k3b. Today I tried to change the audio settings again but nothing works.

The error messages are something like:

[ ] usb 1-4: device not accepting address 2, error -110
[ ] usb 1-4: device not accepting address 3, error -110
[ ] usb 1-4: device not accepting address 4, error -110
[ ] usb 1-4: device not accepting address 5, error -110
[ ] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate usb device on port 4

I don't know much about Linux and don't know how to fix this issue. Suggestions welcomed.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your suggestions. Sadly I have tried mounting them manually and sudo fdisk -l but it's still not successful.

[SOLVED] Can't mount USB HDD and USB DVDRW

Postby mobify on Fri May 01, 2009 10:51 pm

Perseverance does pay off ~ YAY! Finally after spending more days googling, found out what works for my Benq Joybook 7000 laptop was booting the system with the extra pci=routeirq boot parameter. But on some other systems using the other parameters as listed in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingIRQProblems may turn out to be the better solution, so try and test them out.

For example in my system:
1. Adding the noapic boot parameter has no effect i.e. still can't mount properly
2. Adding irqpoll parameter mount the system but has slower performance than using pci=routeirq

Booting with pci=routeirq, and test it with:
Code: Select all
sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb

The mounted drive produces the following speed:
Timing cached reads: 732 MB in 2.00 seconds = 365.80 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 74 MB in 3.04 seconds = 24.33 MB/sec
