Seriously, Mint is based on Ubuntu and for some reason (probably spelled config file) there is a reference to the wrong splashscreen in a config file.
But why? I'm sorry but I don't know - it sounds as one of these freak events that just happens....
I have made a note and will try to find out a solution

see where the key
/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image
points in gconf-editor, if it points to the ubuntu splash then thats whats the problem :)
