ATI 3870, Mint6 64bit driver issues

Postby oakstave on Fri May 15, 2009 4:14 pm

Hello everyone.

This is my first post on the forum.

I have a machine dual booting with XP and Mint 64. I have some positive experience with Ubuntu 8.04, but I'm basically a Linux noob.

My machine has the following specs:
Asus P5W DH Motherboard
E6700 Overclocked to 3.33ghz
2 gig DDR800
ATI 3870 XXX Edition video card (820/1100)

I have attempted to download 3d drivers for the video card using several different methods. The Synaptic Package manager, Software manager, and various CLI combinations to download the ATI Drivers. The SPM states the drivers are loaded, but they don't work. (No advanced graphics work in Compiz) The Software manager stated I could use Restricted drivers, that when downloaded crashed the install. (Black screen after splash).

The ATI website claims they have drivers for my card, but I can't get them working. On other forums I was told to forget it: ATI driver support is horrible, and I might as well buy a new video card, or don't use Linux if I have an ATI card.

Linux sites have stated that driver support is only a problem for Pre-2000 series ATI cards. Mine is a 3870, and it should work, right?

If someone would please post a walk-through of installing ATI drivers for a 3870 I would truly appreciate it!

Sorry, was sleeping. Got to have my beauty rest, especially at my age. Anyway, I recommend you give Envy a try. Via "Package Manager", install Envyng-qt & then use it to install ATI drivers. In "Appearance" > "visual Effects", set effects to "extra". After a restart, you should have use of Compiz & emerald themes. ( if installed)

Alpha-Geek, thank you for the reply! I suppose I can't blame you for sleeping! ;)

Will try, and post the results!

Edit: It didnt' work. Just as it did with the Software Manager, it appeared to dowload/install the drivers, then after restart I got a black screen after the splash. My monitor says "Out of Range".

Last time this happened I had to reinstall the OS.

Any other ideas on how to make these drivers work?
