No Sound

Postby matty on Sat May 16, 2009 4:10 pm

I am trying to run speakers through the audio jacks both on my case and on the motherboard. I am not getting any sound, at all.

lspci gave me this...

What version of Mint are you using?

You may want to search the "Hardware" forum.

You believe? . . . oh well.

Check this out:

I know that there have been a lot of posted problems with newer Intel chipsets, and both Mint & Ubuntu are actively working on it.

Well, lets start by learning what version of Mint you're running. In terminal run the command:

Code: Select all
cat /etc/issue

Also while you're there post the output of this command:

Code: Select all
aplay -l

BTW that's a lower case L.

But basically I'd start with the Basic Troubleshooting Steps here:

Hey everyone,

I've run into the same issue with the ICH10 chipset on my work machine.

I'm running a fresh install of Linux Mint (Gloria) with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic.

I've run through the generic audio troubleshooting on ubuntu's site (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting) and no improvements.

lspci gives me:

I've determined that I'm running alsa 1.0.18rc3, which according to their documentation (http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-kmi ... 859216f481) supports Intel ICH10 cards and specifically the ALC662 playback devices.

Any suggestions?

Ok so at this point I've removed all of Pulse Audio, and linux-sound-base, alsa, and alsa-utils. Then I proceeded to reinstall linux-sound-base alsa, and alsa-utils. My sound still doesn't work.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Alright more information here.

After uninstalling anything and everything Alsa and Pulse, and reinstalling Alsa I go to the gnome sound preferences and get the following error on all of the sound playback tests that are set to Autodetect

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open resource for writing.

Now that leads me to believe everything is working except the device is reporting as busy.

So again, any suggestions?

And just to make sure I've put it out there, I've checked the alsa mixer and nothing is muted.

aplay -vv /data/Music/2008-02-25+14-19+001.wav gives the result:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:590: audio open error: Invalid argument

!!!!!!! FIXED !!!!!!!!

Apparently it wasn't a problem with Pulse at all but rather with the pcm config of Alsa.

At the end of the /etc/modprob.d/alsa-base.conf I added the following two lines:

options snd_hda_intel model=auto
options snd_hda_intel probe_mask=1

I did reinstall Pulse though, so I'm not sure how much of an impact that's having.

Oh also put the following into my ~/.asoundrc :

pcm.!default front:Intel
