A few of question

Postby rivers79 on Sun May 17, 2009 4:44 pm

1. I have a Brother MFC 240C 5 in 1 printer. I have downloaded both the "lpr" driver and the "cupswrapper" driver and installed both and restarted my computer after each installation. My printer however still dose not print. Any ideas?

2. I downloaded newsmole for my news reader. It is supposed to be platform free. I followed the instructions to the letter. The problem I am getting is that according to the terminal program it dose not reconize "setup.sl" command. I am now stuck.

3. Dose anyone know of a good torrent program?

Thanks,
Colin

Thank you. I found the Transmission program as I was looking through my "Menu" button.

For the Brother printer try going to terminal and running:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper* brother-lpr-drivers* && sudo apt-get -f install

Then restart.

It's sort of a crap shoot, but that'll get you everything in the Mint/Ubuntu repos related to Brothers printers.

And it doesn't eat a lot of space, so you'll be OK unless you're very low on disc space.

Oh! I should add that if the "-f install" command returns a prompt to remove a bunch of stuff don't do it!

Post the results here and we'll tell you what's safe and what's not!

It's doubtful that would happen though.

Thank you kansasnoob, however I am still unable to print.

I typed:

"sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper* brother-lpr-drivers* && sudo apt-get"

then restarted my computer. Still nothing.

Here is a screen shot of what the terminal program said when it finished the install.

Cheers

In regards to #2, Thunderbird has the capability to be an excellent Usenet/newsgroup reader. If you want RSS feeds, Firefox will do that, but you also might be happy with Liferea (Linux Feed Reader). I have heard good things about Pan, but I have not used it.

Run this full command in terminal (please just copy-n-paste):

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper* brother-lpr-drivers* && sudo apt-get -f install

I tired entering the full line of code you mentioned:

"sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper* brother-lpr-drivers* && sudo apt-get -f install"

and the printer is still a no go.

I got the printer working.

I went into the "Printer Configuration", the right clicked on the printer and went to "Properties". From there i clicked on the tab "Change" besides the "Make and Model" and changed the model from generic to Brother and it worked.

Thanks to all those who helped along the way.

Cheers.
