Changing the boot loader.

I really do like mint's boot loader, but It seems too aimed at mint and not the other operating systems.

so I made this custom background following the parameters and all I need to do is apply it.

(note, this pallet inst optimized!)
here is a mock-up I made in gimp, hopefully I can make a better version on Photoshop later.

How do I add this to the boot loader?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I know you can do this graphically with a program called "startupmanager". You can change the grub bootloader themes.

Ok we use a different version of grub called grub-gfxboot.
It allows for better backgrounds and is graphical.
Current size limit is 8MBs.

Copy the file /boot/gfxmenu/linuxmint.message file to a work folder.(example used /home/USER_NAME/gfxboot-theme/)
Then right click in Nautilus and click open terminal here.
Now run this command:
Code: Select all
cpio -i < linuxmint.message
Now delete the *message files and back.jpg
Copy your jpg to the folder and make sure it's named back.jpg.
Now run this in terminal to make the CPIO file that the theme needs to be in.
Code: Select all
ls . |cpio -o > /home/USER_NAME/custom.message

Now copy it to /boot/gfxmenu/ and edit menu.lst:
Code: Select all
gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Code: Select all
gfxmenu=/boot/gfxmenu/custom.message

I already made it for you.
