If you install multiple distributions to use the same home directory you could end up with problems like this. You could create a new user profile for your Mint install and copy the files you want from your Ubuntu installation over to the new profile. (eg. you could call your main profile ibenf, and your trial ones benfi, benji, bendy etc.) Then if you decide you want to keep Mint and get rid of Ubuntu you will need to make sure you copy all the files you want into your new profile.
