Dictionary applet won't work...

Post by sdim »

Hi,everyone.
I'm just trying to look up some words on the Dictionary applet, but after I type the word and hit Enter, nothing happens. It just says after a while:
"Error while looking up definition
Connection timeout for the dictionary server at 'dict.org:2628'".

Any help?

many thanks.

I just tried the dictionary and got the same error. The server appears to be down. Hopefully the problem will go away when the server is back up.

And I am still wondering... does this thing even work?
Are there alternatives?

Unfortunately NOT... dicts.info and ipl.org are obviously online.
One needs a localhost option that resides as a panel or sys tray app.

goldendict
Finally... a dictionary that does work... near-line, online or offline.
I discovered this deb some time ago via Synaptic and forgot I had this post.
Synaptic also includes an English dictionary that is automatically configured with the app on first use but you can download others and add them in yourself.
