Very slow transfer of data

Postby 33LYQI on Sat Jun 13, 2009 5:56 am

Hi

I am running Mint 6 on a newly built PC which has 6GB RAM and Intel i7 940 CPU. Up until today I did not have any problems with data transfer [from a drive to a drive] however the sluggish performance started with the following symptoms;

- opening of File Browser takes much longer than before [sometimes even up to 2 min.]
- copying data window reaches 99.9% and sits there

I rebooted the machine when I noticed ASUS Express gate was loading forever. I needed to push reset 3-4 times before it finally got to the Welcome screen. Once I got back to the desktop and repeated the process with two open File Browser windows in my attempt to transfer the files from one to another drive the speed I was getting was 11MB/s. I was getting much higher speed earlier but now am stuck with this problem.

If you have any pointers to what may be causing the problem it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Solved!

Two external [USB] drives were slowing it down. Once unplugged everything returned to normal.
