Cannot update through synaptic or cli

Postby cyprussteve on Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:20 am

I have just tried to update my system after noticing I had a broken padlock symbol on the taskbar. I got the following error messages:-

E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/packages.linuxmint.com_dists_gloria_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I opened the /var file which said my modem dsl connection was not connected. However my modem dsl light is indicating ok, I ran a diagnostic check on the modem ( a Thomson Speedtouch) everything was ok, and I am able to connect to this site to post this message. I tried using the terminal with apt-get and aptitude but received the same error messages.

A further piece of info. I was connected to the internet yesterday evening when we had a power cut and although I'm on my laptop I lost my internet. Just got it back and found this problem.

Any suggestions anyone??

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Check your sources list. Run the code below in terminal, enter your password at the prompt, and a window will open displaying the sources list.

Code: Select all
 sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Be careful when the sources list is open because the editor will be active. Any changes may be permanently installed when the window is closed.

If this list was corrupted or erased by the power surge and loss, you will not be able to use mintUpdate, mintInstall, Synaptic Package Manager, or apt-get.

Ageing Technogeek,

Yes I looked at that but it is ok. There is a similar error file for each of the repositories I have and then another file that lists the packages in each repository. I've booted the Gloria live-cd and checked the files in that and there are none. I'm tempted to just delete all these files and take the directory back to correspond with the live-cd, then reload synaptic/apt-get with an update. Will report back.

Further to my last post, there are files in /var/lib/apt/lists on the live-cd. It looks like some of the files were overwritten by the dsl error message when the power cut occured. I tried to copy the affected files from the live-cd but the system wouldn't let me.

Is there any way I can get the files from the live-cd onto my system? The only other alternative I can think of is a re-install.

steve;

What we cah do is something that worked recently for another similar problem. My sources list is posted here

viewtopic.php?f=90&t=28196&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

You can replace your corrupt list using the sudo gedit command I posted earlier. Just clear your current list and copy and paste my list in its place. It worked there, it should work here. Remember to save the new sources list before you close the window.

Ageing Technogeek,

I compared your sources.list with mine and apart from the fact that I use the cyprus server for ubuntu repositories they are identical. If you look in /var/lib/apt/lists you will see a whole lot of files that detail the package available or downloaded. My problem is that some of these files have been overwritten by the dsl error message when I had the power cut. It's infuriating because the files are available on the live-cd but I can't transfer them onto my laptop or copy them to another disc as my dvd rom is taken up with the live-cd.
