<SOLVED> cannot access linux mint shres from windows pc

i have just set up a couple of NTFS partitions on my linux mint system to be auto-mounted when the system boots and have also set up a shared folder on one of these partitions- now i can't access them from my windows xp computer- whenever i get the prompt to enter the login credentials for the share i put in my username and password (which i have verified are both correct) they won't take. i had set up these same NTFS partitions and folder share when i was running ubuntu on this machine and didn't have any issues accessing the share from the windows xp machine, so i'm guessing i'm either doing something wrong or missing something.

can anyone help me out here?

You're using your Mint Username and password from Windows to access your Mint share? Is this correct?
Did you create the corresponding samba password for that Mint username:

For example, Let's say your Mint username is matt:

Open Terminal
Type sudo smbpasswd -a matt
Type Some_User_Password (when prompted) <--- Does not have to match your login password
It should end with "Added user matt"
