Remove the reader, open a terminal and type "tail -f /var/log/messages", insert the reader (with card) and watch the messages. Post them to this thread and maybe we can then help you out....

This is kind of a non-to-low tech response with a suggestion. I installed one of these card readers in my pc. My experience was that the thing became flaky after about 2-3 months of use. My solution was to purchase an external one and plug it into one of the available usb ports as needed. No problems since this conversion. With the low price of these things these days, it might be money well spent to avoid the kind of difficulties you're running into.

Sorry, then plug an SD card into it and do what I suggested above.
