Mint is currently taking up 2.1 of my 2.33 gb partition. I have 100gb free space, but can't figure out how to extend my ext3 partition. None of the partitioning programs I've tried seem to want to expand it. I need more space to install updates. Earlier today it took up the whole thing and made me reinstall. Any simple way to expand it? I installed mint with the default install button and it seems to want to take up this much space. How can I make it change? Thanks for your help.

Linux won't allow you to modify a mounted partition and your computer can't run without mounting root. If you want to expand your root partition you have to boot to a live disc and do it there.
