3d effects in cassandra, envy installed ati, now what?

i just run envy on my freshly installed cassandra, it installed the ati drivers (radeon 9800). now i want that nice 3d effect with beryl but when i start beryl it automatically changes the window manager back to gnome. do i have to edit xorg.conf or did i forget sth?

when i tried to start "desktopeffects" out of the mintmenue it always said "compiz manager not installed". i then edited the xorg.conf and enabled compiz in there, now the desktopeffects menue comes up, but when i click "enable desktop effects" it says "failed to enable..."

Something is not right, that's clear.
Paste your xorg.conf here so we can see what's wrong.
Unfortunately ATI gives problems, nvidia is far better for Linux

The ATI proprietary driver does not support composite extensions and will not work with Beryl/Compiz unless you install XGL as well. Or you could revert to the open-source ATI driver.

See here for instructions on running Beryl with the open-source ATI driver. You can skip the parts about installing beryl since you already have it. But follow the parts about getting the open-source driver configured correctly.

Generally the open-source driver is recommended.
