Braindead - lost userid/password - SOLVED

Postby phefray on Tue Aug 18, 2009 12:59 am

I am over loaded with passwords at work, and now my new install of Mint at home has been the straw that broke my minds eye. How can I recover my user-id and password?

following directions given url required the use of option 2 - reset at root shell. However, at the prompt (none) / # I typed "passwd username and it returned passwd: unknown user username (which is at the core of the issue, I don't know who I am - from a Mint point of view)

To find out your user name open a terminal and type:
Code: Select all
whoami

It will give you your username.

Edit:

Try this command if you cant use the other:
Code: Select all
awk -F":" '{ print "username: " $1 "\t\tuid:" $3 }' /etc/passwd

Your user name should be somewhere in the list that is displayed in the output.
