Goto terminal and type the following

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Just make sure you make a copy of the first in case you mess things up. Comment or delete the lines in reference to Ubuntu. Then use gParted to delete your ubuntu partitions.

Let me try and understand this, your first post said, I am dual booting Mint and Ubuntu, and want to remove Ubuntu
--next post, I' do that later (edit /boot/grub/menu.1st), but now boot has error 16

Whoa!, what happened between I am dual booting and now I get grub error 16

  • grub errors for stage 1.5
    16 : "Device string unrecognizable"
This error is returned if a device string was expected, and the string encountered didn't fit the syntax/rules listed in the Filesystem Description.

Use a LiveCD and mount the drive that Mint is on, then open it's /boot/grub/menu.lst. Post it here and we'll fix it up for you. Afterwards, we'll show you how to actually get rid of Ubuntu, rather than hide it.

Can you be more specific about what is showing up? If you deleted the partitons and removed the entries from GRUB, then there should be no indication of ubuntu anywhere

Odd...Can you take a screenshot of the /boot/grub/menu.lst for us? There may still be an existing entry for Ubuntu in there somewhere.

Why not just install Mint from scratch and use the whole drive? It would be infinity easier. 15 minutes and you are done.

That's what I did . . . as FedoraRefuge has said:

I had a triple boot . . . Vista, Ubuntu and LinuxMint.
I saved all files, backed-up everything and did a complete install of LinusMint-7 (Main)

Deleted both Vista and Ubuntu, partitioned the complete hard-drive to LinuxMint.
Easier than deciding, should I make that partition this big or maybe make another partition for . . . ?
Also, read in the (LinuxMint and Ubuntu) Forums, that upgrading or using a re-partitioning manager can sometimes cause more problems.
Better and easier if you could do a 'fresh install'

Have not encountered a single problem with it .... m'thinks, I made a wise choice.
Maybe, in the future, after I try out LinuxMint-8 Helena, for a while ... I'll start "distro hopping" ... but for now, I'm happy with my OS.
