I will give it a go when 8 comes out,
I am a backup freak, i have to much photos to loose, I have a 100gig ext 1000ext 320gig pc and a 160gig laptop and i backup to DVDS

DO NOT copy the configuration over. Especially if you're using KDE. Trust me. I've had plenty of installs f*** up due to that. Here's how I do it:
1) Boot live CD
2) Go into old ~
3) Type: for f in .[^.]*; do mv $f ${f}_backup; done
4) Install distro, keeping home directory and users the same
5) ???
6) Profit!
