As for the first question, I believe you set it in some GDM-option. *Digging* Yep, look for an Administration-thing called Log-in Window (or 'sudo gdmsetup' in the terminal - or push it through gksu, if you prefer that), or whatever your localization sets it to. On the second tab, set Style to 'Themed Face-browser'. Next thing you need is the actual artwork - I think you're best off looking for one yourself. (Though MythBuntu, for one, seems to carry a face-browser.)
