I gather your DVD writer works on Windows, in that case why don't you just copy/paste your docs into your Windows partition from Linux, reboot wtih Windows and carry on from there? That should serve as a temporary solution till you are able to troubleshoot.

Did you format the external drive as ext3 or some other filesystem that Windows doesn't support? I would recommend formatting it as NTFS or FAT32 if that is the case, Windows shouldn't have a problem dealing with either of those.
