VMware tools will not install

I am running cassandra under VMware workstation 5.0.0.0 build 13124 and am trying to install VMware tools but keep getting the following message

The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match
your running kernel (version 2.6.20-15-generic). Even if the module were to
compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include] /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.20-15-generic/include

You need to have the kernel sources installed + plus the gcc C compiler. There is a package called build-essential which will auto-install all the needed dependencies. The rest can be found on VMware.com's forums and knowledge base: You need to compile a few kernel modules or else the VMware tools will be unable to run.

Where can I find this build-essential for linux Mint?

use the synaptic GUI and search or apt-get to install it.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential

You need to locate the section about installing VMWare and read up on it,

This type of thing can be a little too advanced for new users, but hey "In at the deep end as they say".

Sorry if I didn't clarify I'm running windows xp. I'm using VMware 5.0 workstation to run linux mint. I can install VMware tools but I can't configure it becuase of the error I posted above. any ideas?

I don't think you understand, you need build-essential and the kernel headers for Mint in order to compile the modules necessary to install VMWare tools.

Well I got all that installed. got VMware tools installed but when I go to configure it I get the following error message

Does this have something to do with my version of VMware?
