Loading /casper/vmlinuz............... forever

Postby vestals_lot on Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:05 pm

So i've been trying to get Mint to run on two computers and never had any luck. But i just got a new laptop and really want to give it another shot.

So I downloaded the ISO and made a live cd with poweriso. I put it in the cd drive and restarted my computer. When my computer starts up I get the green screen that gives me the Mint choices and I run "Start Mint" (the first choice). The screen goes black then it says "Loading /casper/vmlinuz..............." and thats where it stays. I know its suppose to take a few minutes to get past this spot, but i can leave it for an hour and it doesn't change. Cd drive light is on and I can hear it spinning the disc.

Anyone else have this problem? I've tried making multiple discs, from different downloads of Mint without luck. I'm on a Compaq Presario cq60. I have Vista on it still.

which version of mint did u download?? thats really weird.
Plus u shouldn't really get a choice to "start mint" if you downloaded the universal version.
you should set your bio's to boot from CD/DVD first and restart comp, then when it starts up u will see a option like "to boot from CD/DVD press any button"
or
when you first start your computer (before it gets to windows) you should see an option something like "for boot options press F12" or something like that. Then when you press F12 it will give you a choices to where to boot from and you pick ur CD drive and then just let it do everything. You don't need to "start mint" you will get a logon screen.. but don't do anything, it will log in automatically in 10 seconds..

not sure if this fixes ur prob..

I downloaded the Main Edition of Gloria. Does the edition make a difference?

My computer's boot order has the cd drive first, so it runs the cd right away. and it gives me the automatic countdown for mint or i can press the space bar to get a menu. after pressing the space bar for more options it says i can; start mint, start mint in compatibility mode, install mint, boot from hard drive, run a cd error check, or run memory test. regardless, the only thing that i can do is a memory test, because i can't get past the "Loading /casper/vmlinux...." I tried every menu option.

what if u don't press the space bar?? just let it count down and see if it lets u in..
u shouldn't have to see the screen where it gives u those options.. u can install it while ur already up and running in the live cd...

Hi V

First run a CD error check.
No point going further if you've got a bad burn.

Next try these boot options

Press F4. Graphics Modes. select the "Safe graphics mode"

If that doesn't work

Press F6. Other Options. select acpi=off and noapic and/or nolapic

If that doesn't do it let us know.

Incidentally Compaq makes about 300 different models
in the Presario CQ60 series, so the complete Compaq
name would be helpful so I know exactly what your Laptop
specifications are.

cheers

So I checked the MD5sum and it was good. Then I ran CDCheck.exe and got one error for the file "E:\casper\vmlinuz" with a short message saying Data Error (cyclic redundancy check) (code: 23). So I did what seems like my 7th burn and still am getting it. Could it be a PowerISO thing?

I tried f4 and f6 on boot with no luck.

These are some of my hardware specs:
Compaq Presario CQ60-419wm
AMD Sempron SI-42 2.10GHz
3Gb Ram
Nvidia GeForce 8200M G

I'd download from a different source and burn with a different utility, if you're burning from Windows there's tons of free choices that burn well, IMGBurn being just one.

So I downloaded Mint-Universal this time around. Then burned it to a dvd using IMGBurn instead of PowerISO, as suggested. I put it in and start up the computer, get the green screen and let 10sec pass to automatically run Mint. The screen goes black and it says "Loading". It said "Loading" for over an hour! Same as before with the Main Edition, it just stays there like its in an infinite loop reading the dvd. I must have the worse luck ever with Mint.

Maybe check the Mint wiki for possible cheatcodes, I also am new to Mint (not linux)and have one desktop that I'm working to get loaded also, mine gets past loading but can't complete. My issue may come down to a faulty or buggy cd drive.

Hi again V

I see from your posts that you originally had a bad burn  .

With your newly burned DVD have you tried all the strategies I
outlined in my original post :?:

If not try all those strategies and report back. :)

Incidentally are you burning the CD/DVD on the same Laptop you
are trying to install Mint on :?:

Also, disconnect all external devices from the Laptop.
No external drives, ipods, wireless mice, keyboards, dongles or anything else
should be connected when you try to boot.
I couldn't boot the live CD with my ipod connected, you may have
a similar issue.

cheers
mick

So I've pretty much exhausted every option for Mint and still have had no luck. So I decided to try another distro to see if it was Mint alone, or Linux in general. So I downloaded Ubuntu and it worked the first try. I haven't given up on Mint yet. I even tried to copy Ubuntu's casper file to Linux Mint's distro but that didn't work either, just wishful thinking I guess.

Any other ideas?

Speed of burned CD; try 4x rating, about the same speed as a dvd or CDRW media
--some distributions seem overly sensitive to speed settings/readability

I might also use a more generic Linux application for CD writing/burn iso
http://www.yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxT ... DBurn.html
    Burn ISO image onto CD:
    Linux 2.6 kernel: cdrecord -v -eject speed=16 dev=ATA:1,0,0 RedHat-7.0-i386-powertools.iso
Replace speed= and distribution name, and device if not an IDE to match your settings
