Until you make this change, closing the lid only blacks the screen w/o putting the laptop into sleep or hibernate. (I use hibernate because it uses less battery power to sustain. -- But, it does take longer to come back to life.)
If you have any troubles, ensure that your swap partition is as large as, or larger than, your RAM.
I have a very similar laptop. It started w/ a 80 Gb hdd. (See my sig)
