how do i change lcd screen brightness & the gui back!??

got an acer aspire 5630 laptop, duo-core intel.
Got mint on it, love it!
BUT! tHE SCREEN IS QUITE DARK. tried to mess with envy to get the right driver and it killed the GUI!
this is where i am still at, having tried some of the solutions suggested here in this forum.

does anyone have any idea how i can:

A) Get the gui back
B) Alter the brightness/contrast on the lcd screen

If by gui you mean xserver, you can try reconfiguring it with the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

With lcd brightness, have you tried holding the "Fn" (function) key on your laptop and pushing the up/down brightness keys?
