setting display 1024 x 768

Post by jessejazza »

In ubuntu 9.10 and Mint-7

In ubuntu 8.04 there was displayconfig-gtk which set one's display nice and easily. In ubuntu 8.10 onwards to 9.10 this was left out and so it seemed one had to set it manually in xorg.conf. I've had no success. I have tried to do this on my spare machine which ran Fedora ok so i wonder why there are problems with ubuntu 8.10 onwards. I decided this week to give Mint a try and really liked it but i still have the same problem.

From reading various posts on ubuntu forum it seems simple enough. One enters the required values for sections; "device", "monitor" and "screen" into the xorg.conf file. I've taken this from the backup xorg.conf file i saved from ubuntu 8.04 which worked fine [same PC]

I'm sure this is easier to do than i seem to have found it and would be very grateful if someone could put me right.

you have tried grandr or xrandr or such (assuming its availiable in the repos, i`m not sure bout that).
have you tried intel as a driver in xorg.conf (instead of i810), i dont know if that works or not.

if you put your xorg.conf in code tags it will be more easy to read (not for me, for the ones who know how its supposed to be configured :-) )
check if this how-to may be of help in your case:

or just wait for better adice :-)
good luck

Can't you just use "gnome-display-properties" ("Display" in the menu) to set the required resolution?

Not that i've tried. xrandr/grandr i haven't found that easy to use. What other folk do who just swap a monitor i don't know. I don't know why ubuntu cannot leave things alone when they produce a new release. I tried fedora gnome and that works fine. I've just tried Mepis this evening and have to say it is one hell of an improvement on ubuntu - even faster perhaps i've only tried it on my spare test machine that is a Compaq P3.

Ubuntu was my introduction to Linux but i have found that they do odd things with each release at times. I think i'm going to find myself converted to Mepis.
