Software Man vs Package Man

Postby enporter on Thu Nov 12, 2009 6:08 pm

Sorry if this question is already somewhere else, or if this is extremely newbish. I was wondering if anyone could clarify the difference in using the software manager vs the package manager. Is package manager for manually installing certain files of an entire software package? If someone could shed some light on this that would be great. Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

They both essentially do the same thing, Synaptic (Package manager) doesn't use some Mint custom services, like safety levels for updates
--other than that, I can't see any advantage for Mintinstall

And despite prognostications to the opposite I have never had any problems using Synaptic

The Software manager and the Software portal (which you can reach from a web browser) are the same thing and are more newbie friendly than synaptic, but all three can do the same thing and mintInstall (The Software manager) actually uses synaptic in the background
Synaptic is a frontend to apt
It can be difficult to decide which package to install in Synaptic, but if you know that it's easy to use

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
