4..can i use linux mint in german...
Yes, I think so, keyboard layout or scim will allow you to switch language in use
--there is also the international edition, which has more language translation support
5.i love my software firewall
UFW is already running in Linux mint (that is a software firewall), and already protects your OS, additionally if you connect to the Internet via an ISP, their router also has a firewall protection; just don't make the mistake of paying for extra protection services from them, they already have to provide them just to protect themselves, and suggesting you should be paying for that type of protection is simply advertising puffery..

In terminal, check
  • ufw --status
7. i read about a security hole..
Security hole, first note
  • Remote: No
Meaning it is not a remote exploit, so it can't be delivered via the Internet or external connections, only by a logged in user at your desktop..

Therefore unless you are really worried about who gets to use your computer and their skill/interest level vis-a-vis security exploits: nothing to be concerned about
--and usually these kinds of security "oops" get fixed fairly quickly with newer kernels or patches for those that need them..

thx but i thought that german wouldnt be a problem. id like to know if i can use german on the OS (linux mint) and firefox (which i suppose is build in?) in english.
And for individual applications like firefox which don't always pay attention to global (OS settings), for example with fonts; there may also be a problem ref: menus being translated

Firefox: some extensions, mainly for translations not menus..

  • For Firefox menus, might be done via this method..

I think that menus are in English unless someone has already provided a translation

2. i read about a tool where you can install a linux .iso... from windows.... is there something like that existing for linux mint 8 (when its out)?
3. ...getting the nvidia driver to work. ...resolution and dualscreen (dualview) i couldnt get it done like in windows.
6. i used to windows xp fonts. will i be able to get the windows xp classic look (fontwise!)
1) partitions --
a) you can check the size of the free space with the Disk Manager tool in the System Admin Tools or use any linux LiveCD that has gparted.
b) asking how you should partition your hard drive will elicit a plethora of opinions. I partitioned manually. In this post I link to several threads and the wiki section on partitioning. Fred gives some good guidance on partitioning:
c) ext4 will be the default file system for Helena, you can choose ext3 during installation - at least in a manual install. Searching the forums, Mint and Ubuntu, should give a lot of ideas and opinions. There should be more info at the ext4 developers site.
d) /swap -- if you plan to use suspend (sleep) or hibernate, make your /swap as large as or larger than your ram.
e) /home -- a separate home partition can save some headaches, but is not essential. ( I have separate /home /usr and a couple of data partitions which are formated as ntfs to share w/ my XP install.

2) The tool is Mint4Win. It has it's own area in the forums here.

3) nVidia driver should be availabe. I have seen a number or threads in the forum regarding this. It will work with monitors of differing resolutions. A search should find the relevant threads.

6) XP fonts -- Package manager does provide some MS core fonts, many True Type Fonts (MS and otherwise), etc. There are threads in the forums regarding improving the appearance of fonts.

Hope this helps some.

4: I know my Firefox is in English, with (most of) the rest of the desktop in Swedish. Love your package manager, and check the line-up of localization-/internationalization-packages - to be ABSOLUTELY sure you'll see the right languages, only install the languages you know you want (i.e. locale-gnome-de).

6: Check out www.gnome-look.org when you like - you can do BETTER than the XP default-look! (There are also many 3rd party icons/cursors/themes converted to Gnome that were originally made for Windows, so...)
