What program to install .mint files

Postby Sonic-Boom on Sun Nov 22, 2009 6:07 pm

Linux newb question here. I cant seem to use the software portal, when i click on install, the default program to handle .mint files(tar achives?) is archive manager, yet when it tries Archive Manager returns a file type (.mint) not supported message.
Can anyone help please?

Don't download from the mint portal. Use MintInstall that is in your menu - it browses the Mint portal and handles installations.

Only for people who use Mint utilities; like Mintinstall

There are other ways of installing software on any Linux system, including Mint
In a GUI (desktop)
    Synaptic (Package manager)
    Mintinstall (Software manager)
    Mintupdate
    getdeb
In terminal
    apt
    aptitude
    dpkg
    tar
--source files, that have to be compiled to match your kernel version

actually as a follow up question, does mintinstall differ from synaptic in that it uses a single (linuxmint) repository whereas synaptic can be configured to use any repository?

Yes I think it does differ, but since I don't use it; preferring Synaptic, which I can use on any Linux based distribution, as well as not finding it to be better (for me anyway..)
http://www.nongnu.org/synaptic/

I just hope we don't get sucked into the Ubuntu method coming downstream, of their application/web center

--because something like that, might very well kill Synaptic or other choices for the user, and trend towards a distribution only solution; as apparently package management has been indicated as a problem for new Linux users

I personally, just don't see it
Package management, software installation, large number of Linux distributions being a real problem at all..
--but they get mentioned often enough, and as they all say "Perception is reality"

as a new linux user software installation is definitely the most confusing thing, particularly if it not from a repository source, eg. i still have no idea what to do with tar.gz files:( if linux wants to see prime time it needs to be idiot easy, by default! This ubuntu app seems like a good idea. Mintinstall is very easy but the software selection is very limited.
