Don't download from the mint portal. Use MintInstall that is in your menu - it browses the Mint portal and handles installations.

Only for people who use Mint utilities; like Mintinstall
There are other ways of installing software on any Linux system, including Mint
In a GUI (desktop)
- Synaptic (Package manager)
Mintinstall (Software manager)
Mintupdate
removed
In terminal
- apt
aptitude
dpkg
tar
--source files, that have to be compiled to match your kernel version

Yes I think it does differ, but since I don't use it; preferring Synaptic, which I can use on any Linux based distribution, as well as not finding it to be better (for me anyway..)

I just hope we don't get sucked into the Ubuntu method coming downstream, of their application/web center

--because something like that, might very well kill Synaptic or other choices for the user, and trend towards a distribution only solution; as apparently package management has been indicated as a problem for new Linux users
I personally, just don't see it
- Package management, software installation, large number of Linux distributions being a real problem at all..
