mint doesn't see built in wireless

This brand new laptop has built-in wireless. In Windows I can connect wirelessly without a problem, but Mint 8 doesn't see the signal and doesn't seem to be using the built in wireless device (the light isn't flashing). What do I have to do to get it to work? Is it possible that it doesn't work because I'm booting from a CD? The wired internet works just fine.

Can you give us more details of the wireless hardware. It's possible if it's brand new that Mint won't have built in drivers for it and you would have to use the windows ones via the Windows Wireless Drivers in the menu.

Ok, I'm not sure if this is what you meant or what this stuff means, but this is what it says in the specifications regarding the wireless:

I can't say "No" with any degree of certainty, but I didn't have any problem using wireless with Mint-8 live from a USB stick.

My laptop is an Acer Apsire 5532-5535 and I'm using Mint 8.

As Mike suggests, it appears that the driver for the wireless card isn't loaded. Although I haven't used it, the Ndiswrapper under Menu/Administration/Windows Wireless Drivers would be advisable.

I opened up Windows Wireless Drivers and there are none installed, and the "Install New Driver" option just asks me to find a file I already have. What do I have to do to get the right driver installed?

Don't understand what you mean about a file you already have. The dialog is asking you to find the .inf file for your network card from the driver CD, so you will have to put the Windows driver CD for your wireless in the drive and in the Install New Driver dialog, navigate to the folder on that CD that holds the right driver. Hopefully the folder will be called something meaningful like wireless or something? If you're not sure you can look in Windows Device Manager which driver Windows has loaded for your card and try to find the corresponding name on the CD. Don't use this myself, so not fully conversant with it.

The lengths manufacturers will go to save a few cents! Ok, you will either have to download the driver from the web, the manufacturers website is usually a good place to look, or copy the relevant files from the Windows installation onto a usb stick . There may be a folder on your C: drive some place that contains all the Windows drivers, eg. c:\acer\drivers? I had a quick look on the web and found this download link for acer.co.uk, and there seems to be more than 1 wireless lan chipset in use on the 5532-5535 so you need to make sure you get the right one. Again look in windows device manager properties for the wlan card to see which driver it's using.

Yeah, the laptop didn't come with any CDs at all. It's an Acer Aspire 5532, bought in the USA, has Windows 7.

Yeah, I tried installing the driver they had here: http://www.acer.co.uk/acer/service.do?L ... 2980211862 but it didn't work; said the hardware wasn't present, so I removed it from Windows Wireless Drivers. I also tried a driver I found on the Broadcom website that seemed similar, and it seemed a little more likely -- I got an error that said it couldn't tell if the hardware was present or not, but in the Windows Wireless Drivers list it said the hardware was present. However, there seemed to be nothing I could do to actually use the wireless. I'm feeling free to experiment because I'm booting from a CD so I can just reboot if I screw it up.


edit: Still can't get the light on the wireless button to turn on. I seem to remember that when I was working on this before Christmas I had somehow got that light to turn on, but I'm not sure how. Pressing the button, unfortunately, has no effect.

Are you still using the liveCD? I've never had ndiswrapper get a broadcom chip working on the liveCD but if you install it works fine. Also the windows drivers are 32 or 64 bit specific - you need the one that corresponds to the version of Mint you are using.

I assume the chipset is 4357 and should therefore be supported by the Linux b43 driver. Does the Hardware drivers (Menu>Administration>Hardware Drivers) tool want to install b43?

Note: If you use b43 you must use WPA for network encryption. WEP connections just drop randomly. If you have a need to connect to WEP networks (that you do not have the authority to change) you'll need ndiswrapper but I believe it will drain your battery more quickly.
