Question about Dmesg results ? Do I have problems ?

Post by scottjge »

I have been reading and learning about Mint 8 and while reading about dmesg today, I decided to run it and take a look. Well, I learnt that there are a lot of things to learn yet. Would you take a look and see if there are any problems that should be addressed. I found entries that state the Bios ECC not enabled, some ports disabled, and temp readings may be wrong, etc. Are these things that I should be concerned with and should be addressed or is it just that I don't understand everything yet?

thanks,
Glenn

Re: Question about Dmesg results ? Do I have problems ?

Bios ECC not enabled, some ports disabled
That's to be expected :)
The k8temp should also be nothing to worry about - in particular if you do not have an AMD cpu
There are a lot of messages in dmesg that appear just because the system tries to start "everything" and when it finds that this was the wrong hardware for that it "backs down" and writes a message

ECC can only be enabled if the BIOS and RAM support it. Most desktop and laptop RAM modules don't have ECC. Generally speaking, ECC does not make much sense in desktop setups; it is only useful for server and scientific use. So it's nothing you should worry about.

As far as incorrect temperature readings, your dmesg says:

Code: Select all

[ 7.131725] k8temp 0000:00:18.3: Temperature readouts might be wrong - check erratum #141
Erratum #141 is described on page 38 in this official document from AMD: support.amd.com/us/Processor_TechDocs/33610.pdf

Thank you very much for your expertise. As usual I forgot to post the computers specs. I do have an Athlon64 but as the erratum #141 states,no fix planned. So everything is ok. Just learned a little more. I don't know why I can not find all this information by googling rather than bothering everyone, but I don't seem to search for the right terms or something.

Thank you again for the information and your help.

Googling is not straightforward - one of the things I've become really good at is just googling
Exactly how and what I do is not fully clear even to myself :) but I start with a wide search and narrow it step by step like linux > linux + ubuntu > linux + ubuntu + karmic
