Good day to all, I migrated to Mint (Cassandra) from Feisty. Everything is working fine except two things. When I play a DVD in Totem, the picture seems pixalated or should I say not clean and crisp (like lines in the picture). The second is when I tried to play a DVD iso image in VLC, the display is even more pixalated. I tried lowering my video RAM from 128 mb to 64mb in BIOS; and alas no change...Does anyone have a suggestion? BTW, the Cassandra desktop is beautiful!!

my laptop specs: Compaq Presario V2305CA, 60Gig hard drive, 512mb RAM (128dedicated to video), 1.73GHZ CPU, ATI 200m Graphics card (direct rendering enabled), BCM4318 wireless card.

The 200m is not a very powerful video card and this may explain your problems
Someone else had similar problems with this card but I don't find the post....

Thanks for the reply. But with Feisty 7.04; I did not have this issue. It might be that Cassandra uses more resources. I believe Cassandra is built upon 7.04 and I read they recommend at least 512mb of RAM for this Distro. Since 128mb is dedicated to video this could be the problem. In any event it is not a major issue, but one I would like to fix down the road. Thank you for your reply, Steph.

I have a Dell Inspiron 510m with Intel 855 graphics and I get the same problem if I have 3d desktop effects like Beryl etc turned on. It is the same whether it is PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu or Mint. Do you have desktop effects turned on? Maybe that is part of the problem??

If there is a solution or an explanation I would also be interested in hearing it.

BTW Linux Mint is brilliant. I probably won't go back to PCLOS on this laptop - Cassandra is just too pretty and so damn good to use.

I reinstalled Cassandra Mint with 128mb of RAM in BIOS. The DVDs are playing wonderfully. Just tried "V for Vendetta".

I know laptops are "odd"....
Did you have to reinstall - would not just increasing the video memory have helped?
Knowing this may help me help someone in the future...
