gn2, are you on a BT line? I ask cus if you are you wouldn't really see much (financial) benefit from using voip anyway unless you called abroad a lot. Personally I'm on cable and don't have a phone line just internet, so voip saves me quite a bit in line rental and I still have a geographic phone number and use a normal phone so there is very little difference.

I use Skye because that's what my coworkers and almost all my friends use, so it's convenient. Saves a lot in international phone calls.

Yes, the nearest "cable" is roughly a hundred miles away so there's no alternative.
I don't make any foreign calls, if I did then VOIP would be worth persevering with.

MSN has always been my main one, since most of my friends used it. I do hate the actual Windows Live Messenger though, so I use Pidgin.
