A friend of mine recently got ubuntu and showed me beryl. It looked awesome so I got linux mint (because it comes with beryl pre-installed). However whenever I start beryl My screen goes white. I figure I need a new driver but I am a total linux n00b so I was hoping somebody here could help me out. remember I am new at this so VERY SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS WOULD BE HELPFUL. My card is a geforce 5200.

Hi ackbar,
You do need a driver for yer graphics card...

Select "Restricted Driver Management" from you program list and it should automatically figure out that you need a fancy driver for your fancy graphics card. Follow the instructions, and you should be able to run beryl at the endup.

(You'll need a working internet connection for this...)

If you installed Mint and you don't have working internet isn't that a bigger issue that getting Beryl working?

No offense intended, I'm just saying...

Maybe better get Internet working and then work on Beryl.

No I only plan on using it for media use and playing games (in windows) so internet is not a big priority for me right now.

Is it possible to migrate linux mint from my hd to a usb drive and boot it onto my comp with internet?

I'm not sure what you're asking, but you could download the live CD on the computer that has internet working and then also download the ATI driver and burn them both onto a disk and then carry them over to the ill box and go to town.

I have the nvidia drivers... I just dont know how to install them. remember I'm a total linux noob

Usually you'd install them via the repos .. for which you need a working Internet connection. As for the installer package from the Nvidia.com web site: There is a nice readme on their web site ... for which you'd need a working Internet connection too.

I think your priorities are messed up. Good luck with that.

I followed the readme and got to the install but it says it needs to be ran in root. how do I do this?

For example, if you want to install this particular driver do

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run

so substitute the name of your driver for the one that I chose.

It's probably not your graphics card. Beryl must be configured before it is run or you will get a white screen.
