dial-up connection

the answer is gnome-ppp.

download gnome-ppp.deb on another computer.
copy it to you linux mint computer desktop and double click on it to install it.
once installed look in the menu for it.
if it is not there use the menu-> administration-->menulist
look through the different section and when you find it put a tick in the box next to it.
now it should be in the menu (if not logout and login again)
now from the menu drag the icon to the bar at the bottom to create a shortcut.
