I use Partimage (it's in the repositories). It's a command line GUI that will make an image of your partition. The limitation is that you cannot make an image of your actively booted partition. If you're interested in work-around's, post back and I'll discuss a couple of options. For further specifics on Partimage and my backup strategy, I've authored a short paper. It's posted on my website.

The easiest way IMHO to back-up partitions with partimage is to use System Rescue CD. You can either burn it on a CD or install it on your hard disk (in another partition that the one you want to save)

Here is the answer. Partimage does'nt support ext4, so use FSArchiver instead. It's included in systemrescue-CD. Go to FSArchiver web page and read instructions before using it.
Alternatively you can use Clonezilla

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned remastersys yet. I've had excellent results using it before.
