Can't see anything on Desktop

Whatever I save to the desktop I cannot see.

Weird. I can see my desktop files if I use the terminal and ls.

Open your "Home" folder and click on "Desktop" in there. Desktop is a Folder, not the background you look at when you have nothing open.
