DVD playback stopped working

Postby guitarhester on Wed Jul 25, 2007 7:03 pm

Love the linux mint. Originally played DVDs no problem. But 2 days ago I tried to play a movie and totem gave me this, AN ERROR OCCURED "The source seems encrypted, and can't be read. Are you trying to play an encrypted DVD without libdvdcss?"

I know it's not the drive or the DVD, I just watched it in that drive 1 week ago.

So I open up synaptic from the mintmenu and search for 'libdvdcss', I only find libdvdcss2, and it's installed.

halp?

thanks,
hester

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

remove and re-install libdvdcss2. It SHOULD work. Same problem I had in Ubuntu.

I turn my computer off at night, and the day after creating this topic when I rebooted, DVD playback was still broken in the fashion listed above. Today however, it 'magically' works. No reason, I didn't do anything, It just works again. ... Anyone know how or why?

I did a search on the forum, and found a similar issue. I'm currently running Cassandra, and the other players suggest I don't have libdvdcss2 installed. Having an issue with the repositories, I downloaded a copy somewhere else, and reinstalled it. The problem was not solved.

The DVD in question is Final Fantasy Advent Children, and when I attempted to open it in VLC, I got the following output in the terminal:

Code: Select all
VLC media player 0.8.6 Janus
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access

Any suggestions? I tried everything I could think of, and to now avail and would like to play that movie sometime (yes, I'm an FF7 addict... lol.... love the story line, and absolutely loved Advent Children...).
