scrolling issues - Mint 8

Postby number34 on Fri Feb 05, 2010 8:52 pm

I am a total newbie, be gentle.

This is a random issue, as in it only happens once in a while. What happens is when I am scrolling down in a window the text will only scroll in the bottom couple of lines of text. The rest of the text will stay stationary, until I try to scroll back up. Then the text in at the top of the window will scroll down. Eventually the whole window is vertically smooshed into a small unintelligible window. This has happened to me in Open Office and Fire Fox. The problem usually goes away if I restart the PC.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

Thanks,
Tom

I'm not sure i get it
When you scroll down not much happens, but when you scroll up again the scroll that did not happen before happens and squeezes all text into a black line or similar?
It is made more difficult as it happens both inside Open Office and outside - if it was only OO one would look there

Perhaps this will help. I found a screen shot while searching that someone posted that shows what is happening. This is a mild case of it since it is only the very top and bottom of the window. (This is not my image)

If it happens to me again I will take a screen shot of it for you.

I see (with a double meaning :))
The only thing I know of that causes this behaviour is a bad video driver - if you have vesa (which you should not have) this can happen
So we need to know about your hardware - run lspci and post

You have SiS graphics - oh dear....
That could be the root of it - there simply are no good drivers for SiS
This page (although old) explains it but don't use any of the drivers on that page
There's a massive thread in Ubuntu forums about the 771/671 but you have the 761/661 and I'm not sure that's the same
Anyway useful post here
