Install firefox-3.6.tar.bz2[SOLVED]

Postby crouton351 on Sat Feb 06, 2010 9:05 pm

Hi! I have minor problem. I downloaded firefox 3.6 as a .tar.bz2, but I am having trouble installing it. I can't find anything saying "firefox 3.6" in my synaptic manager. Could someone help me?

By the by, it is generally best to stick with the current version on Synpatic unless you are interested in testing new releases which may not work as expected on your system (since they haven't been tested). This shouldn't discourage anyone who knows what they are doing from installing whichever version they want, but for regular users Mozilla themselves advise:

If you use your Linux distribution's packaged version of Firefox, you will need wait for an updated package to be released to its package repository.

Note that the packaged version used in Mint/Ubuntu lacks an upgrade option in the help menu, presumably to help ensure that users use the tested version available on the repositories.

Mozilla also point to an article in Ubuntu's community docs which describes ppas and the implications of a variety of methods of installing new versions of Firefox: link.

Finally, Mozilla describe how to install their bzipp'ed archive at the bottom of this page - if there are specific issues with this then you can always post back here with the details. Good luck with whatever you're trying to achieve.

Thanks! So what you are saying is just to stay put with my current version of firefox and wait for mozilla to test it because I could have problems with it. Since I am surely not someone who knows what they are doing, I'll wait.

@ crouton351:

If you do want to try it, just wanted to mention that those are the same instructions that I used to install Firefox in Mint. Worked out perfectly. Then I put a new launcher for Firefox on my desktop (uses the command ~/firefox/firefox) to replace the launcher for the old Firefox.

I didn't uninstall the old Firefox.

For the launcher, you might have to type in the entire path name for the command -- for example, /home/[username]/firefox/firefox.

I'll try the new one then, and just keep the old one on hand. Thanks to both of you for helping!

I have another question related to this problem. I'm trying to install a new theme (Ubuntu Dust). It is exactly the same as the firefox file. I found it and installed it in my synaptic package manager, but nothing happened. :(
Could someone tell me what happened?

I am unsure as to how you are using synaptic, but if that's a .tar.bz2 (or "tarballed bzip archive"), then you'll want to double-click on its icon wherever you downloaded it (by default), so as to open it with the archive utility known as file-roller. You can think of these files being similar to .zip files that you might be accustomed to if you've used winzip or something of that ilk. The archive manager will display the contained files and allow you to extract them somewhere. In the case of the theme you've obtained, there ought to be a readme contained within the archive with instructions on where to put the files and steps to take in the preferences->appearance menu to activate it. If there aren't or anything goes wrong just let us know :)

Well, something went wrong. D:
I restarted my computer, and now I have no docky and when I scroll over my hidden menu bar, it drops down to the middle of the screen. This is quite a fiasco.

Haha, well I adjusted my GNOME settings and now everything appears ok.

Apologies for misreading your initial post, I thought you meant that you were trying to use synaptic to open an archive file; I assume that you were in fact installing the gnome-themes-ubuntu package. Sorry 'bout that.

Glad you've got gnome back in working order. Best of luck in your adventures :)

Alright! I fixed everything, and I installed the theme as well.

No no, I mislead you. I was trying to install firefox 3.6 (an archive file) and the above theme as well.
