Hard drive running hot....questions.

Postby Linuxperiment on Wed Feb 10, 2010 8:44 am

Hello everyone. I've been distro hopping lately and ever since I switched to Linux Mint 8 my laptop hard drive runs hot. Is there any reason why this is happening or is this a well-known bug? For the record, I'm saying it's running hot because the palm area is much hotter than it ever was before back when I used Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and CrunchBang 9.04. My specs:

Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.0 GHZ
Western Digital 160GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
2 GB DDR2 RAM
Intel X3100 Integrated Graphics
Power Management Settings: I disabled the option of slowing down the hard disks when possible. Was this a bad idea?
I'm running minimal desktop settings in compiz and the "appearance" portion.

I'm wondering about this because I left my laptop on overnight plugged in, and all of a sudden when I came to use it this morning the hard drive was pretty hot. Anyone got ideas? I love this distro but if it causes my hard drive to run hot all the time I'm going to have to switch back to XP or another distro.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The operating system should not be making the drive run hot. I would turn the power management options back on. Also, you might want to run the hard drive manufacturers utilities to see if the drive is in good condition.

This laptop is under 1 year old and has been babied. It has a WD Hard Drive as well, and I know hard drives are random (some die, some don't) but I highly doubt it's the hard drive. Anyways, I've turned on the power management features back on and I hope it works. I really like Mint :)

Ant change regarding the surface where the laptop spent the night? Hopefully a hard surface with plenty of air circulation available.
