Mint 8 won't complete restart cycle :(

Hi all!

Get to the meat of the problem. I am running Mint 8 32bit on a Dell Optiplex 755 dual core computer. I have adjusted the partitions on my harddrive to make swap larger. Had issues with the new swap being found but looking through the Ubuntu forums, solved that problem.

Still have this problem though. If I go to menu>quit>restart, the computer will start shutting down; screen will go blank and type out the processes it is going through. Then it will say that it is restarting the computer and freezes! Cursor stops blinking, harddrive stops and that is it. I have to press my power button to shut it off. Haven't really found any post anywhere to help me with this one. Need some help on this one!

Thanks! :)

Just an update: I copied down what shows up on my screen during the attempted restart.

Init: usplash post-start process (2543) terminated with status 1
* stopping the Winbind daemon winbind
* shutting down ALSA ...
* asking all remaining processes to terminate ...
* deconfiguring network interfaces ...
* deactivating swap ...
* stopping remaining crypto disks ...
* stopping early crypto disks ...
* will now restart
[5066.345727] restarting system
_

Cursor stops blinking and hard drive activity light goes out at this point.

Does you computer also hang when you try to shutdown? Or does it just hang on a restart? And did it do this before or only since the change to your swap partition?

Thanks. It will usually shut down just fine. It has "burped" a time or two, and that seems to have happened after the resizing of the swap file.
For the most part though, it shuts down fine.

I didn't notice it doing this before I changed the swap file size. This all started when I noticed that my computer wouldn't go to sleep at the appointed time of inactivity. Swap file was 1.5G, I have 4Gig of ram memory. Adjusted the swap file (increased it). Then, when I booted up, I started getting notices about unable to mount the swap file. Found post about this (it was a uuid problem) and it seems to be fixed. It seems to have manifested itself during the changing of the swap file size.

I have checked the uuid for the / partition and it "seems" fine. (I'm not very learned in this area, never had a problem before with this)

i am no expert in UUID's either, but these are my findings (someone correct me if i'm wrong):
the uuid of a partition is calculated based on the size and location (and possibly also the fs type itself, though haven't played with this yet) and seems to be stored in the partition's partition table as well. this causes the uuid to remain inaltered after resizing a partition (with gparted), though at boot the uuid seems to be calculated (and not retrieved from the partition table).

i would suggest to just delete and recreate the swap, so that you will have the correct uuid and can amend it in your fstab. if you have enough disk space to make backups, i would do the same for the other partition(s) you modified.

Ok, here is where I am with things. Linux Mint 8 will shut down just fine. I will still not restart at all (have to press the power button for the computer to do a cold shut down). Also, it will not suspend. The screen saver will come on, but the computer will not suspend at the designated time. Get this, the only exception is if, when I boot up Mint and go to Menu>Quit>suspend, it will suspend. It will boot back or wake up from suspend just fine. Now, after I do that, the computer will suspend or put itself to sleep on its own at the proper time that I have designated for it to do so. Will continue to work until I do a cold shutdown and restart Mint. Then I have to manually suspend that first time to get it to start working. Sooooooo....

Still will not restart at all.

Suspends as described above. Wow! This is a new experience! :(

Just an update to post. It is a suspend problem.
