Cannot connect to the internet with Mint8

Postby jayjoshi on Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:42 pm

Hi,

I'm a real newbie. Just downloaded the iso, burned it and used it to install Mint8 on an old WIndows XP computer, just overwrote everything. It was a breeze. Everything I have tried seems to work fine, but clicking on Firefox tells me the internet is not working. I had enabled the firewall, so I disabled it again and still no luck. I pul the internet cable and stick it in a WIndows computer and the internet works. I pull the cable and put it back in my new Mint8 computer and no luck. I assume this proves everything downstream of the cable end is working.
I trawled google, but soon realized these issues are very specific, found this forum, joined and here I am begging for help.
I read some posts here so to try and cut a couple of iterations here is some info. Sorry about it being inline, I couldn't get the system to accept any or no file extensions so I don't know how to upload an attachment.
I am hard wired to a router, as I said the same cable when plugged into another computer works fine. Two days ago the same cable worked fine in this computer when it was running Windows, so I presume the hardware is still fine.

Did you click on the networking icon in the panel to enable? Left and right click give different options. I only mention this because a newbie may be used to other methods. :D

Its amazing. I don't know what changed, nothing as far as I know. I did reboot since last night when it wasn't working. But that is such a Windows solution. :-)
I am typing this at my new working Linux browser! Thanks all for listening.
